Our first read is Martyr! by Kaveh Akbar — a sharp, funny, and deeply moving novel about identity, grief, addiction, family, and the search for meaning.
Through the story of a young Iranian-American poet, Kaveh Akbar explores questions of belonging, faith, and what makes a life meaningful. It’s an unusual, beautifully written book that moves between the personal and the political without ever feeling like a history lesson.
We’ll read it together and talk about the questions it raises — and, of course, about what it has to say about Iran and the Iranian-American experience.

I`m Katya, a Persian teacher based in Tehran. I’ve spent years helping people discover Iran — through its language, streets, food and everyday life. I created Chapters of Iran because I wanted to create a space where people could explore another side of the country: its stories.
